| Why Digital Two-Way |
Professional two-way radio systems operating on
licensed spectrum offer capabilities that other mobile technologies
cannot. These advantages make it the clear choice for mobile
organizations who require an affordable, flexible, highly reliable
solution—along with the power and range available only in licensed
bands.
With two-way radio, you can tailor a solution to meet
your specific coverage and functionality needs. There's no need to
deploy supporting infrastructure in a field situation—or to rely on
often unreliable and always more costly public networks. A two-way
radio solution typically pays for itself in less than 18 months
compared with cellular or public carrier solutions. That means only
a small up front investment and no recurring monthly
fees.
The Digital Difference
Analog two-way
radio use proves itself every day in countless installations around
the world. But analog technology has reached its limits of
innovation. Today a new platform is required to help you achieve new
levels of performance and productivity. Digital technology
represents that breakthrough.
Many businesses need more than
the fundamental services that analog two-way radio can deliver.
Licensed channels are becoming crowded and you may need more
capacity. In combination with voice, you may also need access to
data to improve responsiveness and productivity. Digital two-way
radio provides a powerful, flexible platform that can be adapted to
meet these needs and more. With MOTOTRBO you can benefit
from:
- Expand digital voice, data, and control capabilities. delivered over a given slice of RF spectrum. With digital two-way
radio, you can get increased capacity and flexibility to support
more users in more ways.
- Lower licensing and equipment costs. Digital two-way
radio solutions based on Time
Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology enable two virtual
channels within a single 12.5 kHz licensed repeater channel. This
provides twice the calling capacity for the price of one license.
And because there's only one "real" channel, a second call doesn't
require a second repeater.
- Clearer voice communications over a greater range. When
signal strength drops off with distance, digital error-correction
technology can accurately deliver both audio and digital content
with virtually no loss over a far greater area.
|
|
|
| |
- Static and noise rejection. Analog signals become
distorted, producing audible static as signal strength degrades.
By contrast, digital receivers simply reject anything they
interpret as an error. TDMA divide power-intensive transmissions
into two independent time slots. That means each individual
transmission only uses half the battery power of an analog system
transmitting at the same wattage.
- Additional functionality. Digital systems based on TDMA
divide power-intensive transmissions into two independent time
slots. That means each individual transmission only uses half the
battery power of an analog system transmitting at the same
wattage. Since transmitting is the most energy-intensive
operation, digital two-way radios can typically function 40
percent longer between recharges compared to analog
radios.
- Additional functionality. Digital two-way radio systems
based on TDMA can provide additional features beyond two-way voice
by using the second time slot for a second call, dispatch data,
enhanced call signaling and control for future enhancements such
as emergency pre-emption.

radio with digital technology to deliver improved capacity, higher
productivity, lower costs, faster response times and improved
reliability. That means more capabilities—and more value to
you.
- Increased capacity at a reduced cost. MOTOTRBO provides
spectrum efficiency by doubling the number of users who can be
supported on a single licensed 12.5 kHz channel. This enables more
information to be transmitted on existing frequencies. It also
means up to a 50 percent reduction in repeater costs compared with
equivalent analog systems, because a single repeater provides the
benefits of two analog repeaters.

- Integrated voice and data. MOTOTRBO combines enhanced
voice with critical data applications to increase operational
efficiency and productivity. The integrated applications that are
initially available include:
- MOTOTRBO™
Text Messaging
- MOTOTRBO™
Location Services
MOTOTRBO also simplifies the
integration of third-party data applications with either a direct
IP interface to the radio or an option board interface, standard
USB connection and IP addressing.
- Enhanced features.
- Longer talk time with up to 40 percent longer battery
life than analog radios.
- Improved audio quality at the edge of coverage
compared with analog radios.
- Improved background noise suppression as digital
voice processing automatically detects and reduces background
noise in a caller's environment.
- Built-in privacy with no additional equipment.
- Faster and more reliable calls with enhanced call
signaling and control for one-to-one, one-to-many and one-to-all
calling. And enables future enhancements such as emergency
pre-emption.
- Better design. Smaller, lightweight and rugged system
components, including submersible portable units (IP57 certified)
to ensure maximum portability and reliability. Mil St 810
certification and Accelerated Life Testing ensure durability. And,
MOTOTRBO portable radios with FM batteries are also Factory Mutual
(FM) approved for intrinsic safety.
- Easy migration from analog to digital. MOTOTRBO's
backward- and forward-compatible platform facilitates migration,
providing both analog and digital operation modes This enables you
to realize the benefits of digital without having to replace your
current analog infrastructure.
- Standards-based, future-facing platform. MOTOTRBO is
built on the globally-recognized European Telecommunications
Standards Institute (ETSI) Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) tier two
standard for professional mobile radio. MOTOTRBO also meets
existing United States regulatory requirements for 12.5 kHz
efficiency, and its software-upgradeable platform simplifies the

| Technology Platform |
Leveraging a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA)
platform, MOTOTRBO reduces overall equipment costs while supporting
more users and more information in the same area and frequency. The
performance and flexibility of TDMA make it the only serious choice
for professional two-way digital radio.
- Increased spectral efficiency in existing 12.5kHz
channels. TDMA enables 6.25 kHz equivalent efficiency in
licensed 12.5 kHz repeater channels. This doubles per-channel
capacity, while satisfying future regulatory requirements for 6.25
kHz equivalent efficiency. And unlike 6.25 kHz transmission
methods built on Frequency-Division Multiple Access (FDMA)
technology, TDMA fits seamlessly into existing licensed channel
structures in UHF and VHF—increasing performance, eliminating the
need for rebanding or re-licensing, and reducing the risk of new
forms of radio channel interference.
- Lower equipment costs. With TDMA, one repeater can do
the work of two analog repeaters—lowering acquisition and
operating costs. TDMA allows you to achieve 6.25 kHz equivalent
efficiency while minimizing investments in repeaters and combining
equipment. Unlike analog or FDMA technology that requires a
dedicated repeater for each channel plus expensive combining
equipment, two-slot TDMA achieves two-channel equivalency using
single-channel equipment.
- Advanced features and flexibility. At the repeater, the
second slot in a TDMA technology platform can be used to deliver
advanced features—such as IP-based dispatch data enhanced
signaling—in parallel with a call on the other slot.
- Increased battery life. TDMA delivers up to a 40
percent improvement in battery life compared with analog radios,
because any given radio is transmitting only during every other
slot. Effectively, this means the radio is only transmitting
approximately half of the time.
- Standards-based. TDMA is the globally-recognized
European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Digital
Mobile Radio (DMR) tier two standard for professional mobile
radio. TDMA also meets existing United States regulatory
requirements for 12.5 kHz efficiency in both analog and digital
mode.
